EXCLUSIVE: Aamir Khan feel-good comedy-drama Sitaare Zameen Par has landed at Sony LIV nearly a year after its theatrical debut.
The India-focused streamer, which operates in more than 40 territories, will debut R. S. Prasanna’s uplifting basketball-themed pic as the first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on the service. The film had landed in theaters in June 2025 and was the sixth-largest Hindi-language movie of the year at Indian box office, and was later offered for a fee on YouTube’s on-demand service.
Sitaare Zameen Par follows Khan as Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach whose life takes an unexpected turn after a drunk-driving incident lands him in community service. As part of his sentence, he is assigned to train a team of neurodivergent players for a basketball tournament, and what begins as a reluctant responsibility soon transforms into a deeply personal journey.
Directed by R. S. Prasanna (Kalyana Samayal Saadham, Shubh Mangal Savdhan), the film stars Bollywood superstar Khan alongside Genelia Deshmukh, Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai and Naman Misra.
Khan made the film alongside Aparna Purohit under the Aamir Khan Productions banner, with B. Shrinivas Rao and Ravi Bhagchandka serving as producers. Divy Nidhi Sharma is the writer.
Khan is the star of some of India’s most enduring big screen hits such as 3 Idiots and Peepli Live and has been considered to be among the most bankable actors in Bollywood. He has been increasingly focused on production over recent years, making the likes of Sitaare Zameen Par and Laapataa Ladies. Next up is period drama Lahore 1947, an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
As for Sony LIV, giving a Hindi film a streaming premiere for the first time marks something of a step change.
The Sony Pictures Networks India-owned streaming service has to date made its name and built an identity through originals such as Rocket Boys, Scam and Freedom at Midnight, with Real Kashmir Football Club, a scripted series from Jaya Entertainment and Oshun Entertainment, recently featuring as Deadline’s Global Breakout.
